Second, and more relevant to your concerns, it expanded the class buildings from one to three, substantially increasing the level of infrastructure required to build tier 4 units. Only a few changes at first, but they paved the way for a massive amount of diversity in the game. It made two major changes that IMHO the game sorely needed: First, it started to add racial distinctions to class units: High Elf Bards getting Longbows, for example, while Goblin Bards got a boost to poison damage. To me, patch 1.2 was the moment the game went from good to great. Just to give you some perspective on where I'm coming from.
